5 Reasons Why Baja California Sur Has the Most Spectacular Sunsets in Mexico

With around 350 sunny days annually (yes, 350!), there are ample opportunities to watch epic sunsets. Visitors to Baja plan their evenings around the event and it’s a ritual amongst most locals to pause and soak in the sky transform, no matter where they are. The latitude here in Baja creates a perfect angle for extra-long, intensely colored twilight…

Extended “golden hour”? Yes, please!

From our bungalow rooftop patio, you have a private spot for an evening cocktail or gathering with friends while you watch the sun go down over the Pacific ocean. Other favorite spots in the area where we love to watch sunsets are San Pedrito Beach (just a 15-minute walk or few minutes to drive), Amaya Beach Bar, The Green Room, Hotel San Cristobal, Sky Lounge Bar, and Cerritos Beach.

With every sunset being a spectacular show, you sometimes wonder…why?

  1. The dry, clear desert air has less humidity and pollution, allowing vibrant colors to shine through more intensely.

  2. Fine desert dust in the atmosphere scatters light beautifully, creating those signature orange, pink, and purple hues.

  3. The meeting of desert mountains and sea level creates unique atmospheric layering.

  4. The Pacific acts as a mirror, doubling the visual impact and creating that magical glow.

  5. While summer monsoons can create dramatic cloud formations, winter's clear skies offer crisp, vivid displays.

Peak sunset season is typically October through March when the sun sets over the Pacific at the most dramatic angles. And, the sky often stays colorful for 30-45 minutes after the actual sunset – what photographers call the "blue hour"!
