Punta Lobos Hike – Todos Santos
The best hike near Todos Santos! :)
If hiking with both ocean and mountain views sounds dreamy to you, this hike is a must-experience. It’s only a 10-15 minute drive from our bungalow!
The rugged Baja coastal views, large cacti, blue skies, and cove are just stunning. You can often see whales in the distance in the Winter and fishing boats year-round.
It’s easy to get to the Punta Lobos trailhead and parking lot – just pull off of the main road in between El Pescadero and Todos Santos, as if you are heading to Hotel San Cristobal (you can either map out the trailhead or the hotel on Google Maps and it will bring you there). You’ll see an abandoned building (formerly a cannery) and you’ll walk toward that until you see the trail!
The trail is moderate and winds toward the coast with views of the hotel, coastline, and vast, sparkly ocean. At one point on your hike, you can choose to go down a steeper, more technical path to the large pebbled beach / cove. Go, if you can! Oftentimes, there’s a handful of people either lounging or taking a dip in the water.
Views on this hike are endlessly beautiful and stark – there’s no coverage, as it’s pure desert. We recommend going early morning or late afternoon before sunset, but leave enough time to get back before darkness falls. Depending on your speed and stops to take photos, it will take an hour to an hour-and-a-half (or so) round trip, not including time at the beach. If it’s a slightly cooler day, a daytime hike would be perfect.
Because it’s a rugged trail, be sure to wear the appropriate gear – hat, hiking boots or other comfortable footwear with tread, a layer or two because the sun is intense and the ocean breeze can be a bit cool, water and snacks, lightweight towel if you’ll be dipping in the ocean, and your phone or camera to snap some photos!
Add it to your to-do list when you’re visiting – it’s a great workout and, if you make it down to the beach, a refreshing treat!
