El Pescadero Insider Guide: Your Quieter Escape

If Todos Santos is the "discovered" Baja coastal town, then El Pescadero is its secret-keeping older sibling. Just ten minutes south, this small village offers everything you'd want from a Baja escape – authentic restaurants, local culture, ocean access, and genuine community – without feeling like you're performing tourism for Instagram. :)

When Drew and I first found El Pescadero, we couldn't believe more people didn't know about it. It has all the charm of Todos Santos but maintains a quieter, more laid-back energy. The pace is slower. The tourists are fewer. The locals actually outnumber the visitors. And honestly? That's exactly why we fell in love with it.

El Pescadero sits about an hour north of Cabo and ten minutes from Todos Santos, positioned perfectly between two worlds. Close enough to access everything you want to do, far enough away to feel like a genuine escape. It's the kind of place where you can stay for a week and actually feel like you've slowed down—not just checked "Baja" off your bucket list.

The Food Scene Is (Quietly) Incredible

This might surprise you, but El Pescadero has some of the best restaurants in the entire area. And because it's quieter than Todos Santos, you won't have to fight crowds or wait weeks for a reservation. You'll just show up and enjoy.

Benno, which is located at Hotel San Cristobal, is technically in Todos Santos by the address, but it’s way on the outskirts of town (closer to our bungalow), so I’m counting this as an El Pescadero spot. :) It is INSANELY delicious and is also a Michelin-recognized restaurant. Elevated cuisine, incredible service, creative cocktails, and inspiringly beautiful decor. Order the corn ribs, the risotto, and anything else you desire – you simply cannot go wrong. After your meal, take a walk toward the pool and stop in the "library" where there are couches, cool décor, and a record player. It’s a total vibe. You can also walk out past the pool to see the beach and ocean. A true showstopper of a place.

Agricole Cocina de Campo and Hierbabuena are both are just a few minutes to drive to and are restaurants where you can eat in an open-air setting amongst the plants and flowers. Truly farm to table, which is a common theme in Baja! The food is local and delicious, the cocktails are wonderful, and the staff at both restaurants are incredibly friendly. Connected to Agricole is Agricole Tienda de Campo, an artisan food market that's perfect for grabbing freshly-prepared groceries after your meal. Everything from bakery goods, jarred foods, juices, wine, cheese, and sweets. (I’m absolutely obsessed with their house-made pickles and their chocolate amaranth bites!) They're known for their Fresas con Crema (strawberries and cream dessert) – grab one from the fridge near checkout. So yummy! Hierbabuena’s kitchen does cater to dietary restrictions like gluten-free and vegetarian (I am both). The menu updates regularly, so there's always something new to try.

Pescadero 62 and Jerry’s Pizza are two spots in the same location, just down the road from our bungalow. Burgers and pizza, a favorite of many! They often have live music and food / drink specials, and is just a fun place to hang out.

If you're craving fresh sushi, Noah Sushi is a gem. Super fresh fish and everything is tasty – Drew loves this spot!

And, just down the road from us (you could walk there in six minutes if you wanted to) is Palmar. It’s a cozy restaurant in a home with freshly-made breakfast, lunch, or dinner…if you catch it when it’s open, definitely stop in (it has somewhat random hours and is often closed).

The Beaches Are Your Backyard

One of the best-kept secrets about El Pescadero is the beach access. You're just a few minutes in the car from some of the best stretches of sand in Baja, and because fewer tourists know about them, they're less crowded than what you'll find near Cabo. You can read about some of these beaches more in-depth HERE, but below are little snippets. :)

Cerritos Beach is the most popular swimming and surfing beach in the area. Bring your lounge gear and umbrella, boogie board, surf board, and enjoy the day. (If you’re staying at our bungalow, surf boards and boogie boards are available first-come-first-served at Casa Hygge if you need them! Otherwise, friendly locals set up shop on the beach and have solid rentals.) With a view of the iconic bright yellow Hacienda Cerritos to the north and endless beach to the south, you're surrounded by immense beauty. Bring extra pesos to spend on locally-made wares or grab a delicious cocktail from the vendors.

San Pedrito Beach has two entrances and offers a quieter alternative to Cerritos. One entrance is at the end of the main road (right next to Kimpton Mas Olas Resort), which is a 15-20 minute walk or few minutes drive. The other is right next to local favorite spot, Amaya. This beach is perfect for bringing one of the Mexican blankets and watching the sun go down. It's also a favorite spot for intermediate surfers, but it's never as crowded.

Las Palmas Beach is quiet and kind of a sanctuary, as it’s tucked down a dirt road. A picturesque wading beach and a place where locals gravitate to for sunset serenity.

Then there's the beach in behind Hotel San Cristobal. (To get there, just map out the hotel and park in the parking lot. It’s lovely and never-crowded beach. You’ll often see fisherman bustling to your left (or south) and calm, sloping beach to your right (north). This beach is great for daytime relaxing or sunset, but is not recommended for swimming (like the majority of the beaches in Todos Santos).

Where to Grab Coffee & Hang Out

La Comuna Cafe is just down the road from our bungalow and is wonderful! It’s a laid back espresso bar with a variety of coffee drinks, small bites, and smiles all around. Located right off the main highway, it’s connected to Pescadero 62 and Jerry’s Pizza…just look for the mural.

Baja Beans is a local favorite coffee shop – popular for all your caffeine needs and treats. It's where you'll find locals lingering over morning coffee, which means it's the perfect spot to actually feel like part of the community.

Mini Super Munchies is a tiny market and café just about a 10-minute walk (or very short drive) toward the beach from Cielo Pacífico / Casa Hygge. They feature snacks, locally-made gifts, beer, wine, and the BEST ice cream sandwiches. They're often hidden in a freezer on the side, so ask the person working if they have any in stock. The Real Reason We Stay Here

Here's the truth: El Pescadero doesn't have as many shops or galleries as Todos Santos. It's not trying to be a "destination." It's just... life. Real life. People live here. They work here. They eat here. They raise families here. And that's exactly what makes it special.

You can grab groceries at Salgado’s Market – a local market where actual locals shop. You can eat at restaurants where the owner knows your name by day two. You can sit at a bar and have a genuine conversation. The pace here is intentional and it’s the kind of place where you go for a weekend and suddenly realize a week has passed and you're not ready to leave.

Plan Your El Pescadero Escape

If you're torn between Todos Santos and the quieter surrounding areas, I'd encourage you to experience both. Spend a day or two in Todos Santos exploring the art, galleries, and elevated dining scene. Then retreat to El Pescadero for the slower pace, the local spots, and the genuine community feel.
